Why Knowing Your Love Language Changes Everything
Happy Girl on the Rise Wednesday,
Happy Hump Day! This week, I’m talking about love languages. Just as a little precursor to this week’s content, I’ve known my love language for a few years now. But I always thought it just had to do with how I wanted to be loved by other people. But as I’ve been thinking about it recently, I realized that your love language also helps you understand how to give love to yourself. And honestly, this might be a breakthrough that changes my life in a very meaningful way. And maybe it changes your life too!
This week’s Girl on the Rise Newsletter is 751 words (2-minute read)
This week’s affirmation:
“It is okay for me to fill my own cup!”
Learning Your Language of Love
We all speak different love languages. And I’m not just talking about in our relationships with others, but also in how we connect with ourselves.
You’ve probably heard of the five love languages:
Words of Affirmation
Acts of Service
Receiving Gifts
Quality Time
Physical Touch
But here’s what most people don’t realize…
Your love language isn’t just how you want to receive love, it’s also how you naturally give it.
And understanding that can change everything, especially your relationship with yourself.
When you know your love language, you begin to see the world through a new lens:
You stop expecting love to look the same for everyone.
You learn to recognize love when it shows up differently.
And, this one’s my favorite: you learn to love yourself in a way that actually feels right to you.
To show you what I mean, let’s break it down for each love language.
If your love language is Words of Affirmation, try to speak kindly to yourself every day. Replace your self-criticism with compassion.
If it’s Acts of Service, do things that make your life easier, like meal prep, organizing your space, and checking off your to-do list items.
If it’s Receiving Gifts, treat yourself to something meaningful like a new book you’ve been excited to read, the massage you keep holding off on, or flowers for your desk.
If it’s Quality Time, spend time alone with intention. Shut out all the distractions and spend some time with your thoughts and emotions.
And if it’s Physical Touch, reconnect with your body. Stretch, move, or simply rest your hand on your heart and take a few deep breaths (this literally feels amazing by the way).
The way you show love to yourself sets the tone for every relationship you’ll ever have. When you learn your own love language, you stop waiting for others to fill your cup and start pouring the water your damn self. You become your own source of love and peace. And that’s the ultimate flex!
This week’s reflection:
What’s your primary and secondary love language? And how can you show yourself love in that way this week?
